April is “National Donate Life” Month

Did you know that over 22 people die every day waiting for a transplant? In fact there are more than 122,000 people across the United States that are waiting for a transplant. Most people really don’t think in-depth about organ donation. Of those of us that do think about it, there may be fear, or misconceptions holding us back. Organ donation is the gift of life. Through the selfless act of donating organs or tissues, you can save the lives of up to eight people in dire need.

When you sign up to be an organ donor you don’t need to worry about a thing. All recovery and transportation costs are covered. Your body is treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Your body is in no way mutilated or purposefully damaged during the harvesting; in fact your body will be treated in the same manner as a living patient, as organ procurement takes place in a sterile operating room. People of any age, shape, size, or medical history can sign up to be an organ donor.  Medical evaluations are done on each donor to ensure that only the healthiest, most viable organs and tissues are harvested for transplant.  Additionally, there is no need to worry about your organs being sold on the “black market.”  All harvests and transplants take place in legitimate healthcare settings, under the supervision and care of profession transplant teams.

The NJ Sharing Network is New Jersey’s premier organ procurement organization. Founded in 1987, the NJ Sharing Network has been a vital link in bringing prospective donors and those in need – together.  Being a registered nonprofit organization, they rely heavily on volunteers and donations from the public.
