Mu Alpha Who???
Mu Alpha Theta is WCCC’s national mathematics honor society. It was formed in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma and is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. This prestigious organization represents over 112,000 student members in more than 2300 schools in the United States and 20 foreign countries. The honor society offers more than $300,000 in scholarships, grants, awards, and prizes yearly.
Here at WCCC, the math club and honor society was founded by, and advised by, Dr. Joseph Phillips. It meets once a month, and everyone, not just those who excel at math, are invited to attend. We discuss our events, fundraising ideas, campus news and gather with fellow students with the same interests and passion for math. At the end of each meeting Dr. Phillips provides us with an awesome math lecture that never disappoints.
To be inducted into the math honor society you need to have a B average or higher in at least one college level math course. You will also need to participate in our events to earn the honor and privilege of being inducted. Some of the activities you might be involved in would be: fundraisers such as candy or bake sales, Friendly’s Fundraising events, calculator competitions, United Way Day of Caring events, etc.
It is an honor to be a part of such a stellar organization. In the past, we have brought a math team to four National Math Competitions and have won trophies in several categories and one of our members recently participated in a NASA intern program! When possible, our club also attends outside lectures, tours and events.
Meeting days/times/location change each semester. Presently we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30 in room E207. Our December meeting will be held a week earlier on Wednesday December 14th; we would love to see you join us. Rumor has it that awesome snacks are usually provided!
